Basic: How Computer Vision Work?

Today we’re going to talk about how computers see. We’ve long known that our digital cameras and smartphones can take detailed images, but taking pictures is not quite the same thing.

For the past half-century, computer scientists have been working to help the computer understand the imagery they capture.

From tracking hands and whole bodies, biometrics to unlock our phones, and giving autonomous cars the ability to understand their surroundings.

Application: In Line Dual Sensor Gap and Flush Inspection - LMI Technologies

At LMI, we are excited to provide our automotive partners with cutting-edge gap and flush measurement capabilities.

For the configuration seen here, we are using one downward-facing, ultra-wide field of view Gocator 2490 to determine the 6 degrees of freedom of the vehicle. That information is then relayed to a Kuka robot arm, allowing our buddied, blue line Gocator 2440’s to make a detailed gap and flush measurements.

Buddied sensors are networked to generate a single, high-accuracy 3D scan of the target. This configuration also solves for any potential occlusions on the scan target.

Scanning and inspection happen continuously and with no external computing required; as the vehicle moves down the assembly line.

Print quality inspection of bar and data codes - MVTec HALCON(Machine Vision, Bar Codes, Data Codes)

You will learn how to apply print quality inspection to bar and data codes with MVTec HALCON on this video.

We’ll focus on the international standards ISO/IEC 15415 and 15416. At the same time also get to know ISO/IEC 29158 and SEMI T10-0701, which focus on the quality of direct part marking (DPM) codes.

Furthermore, we’ll have a look at the importance of a standard-conform image acquisition setup. We’ll go through two HDevelop examples that simulate printed codes and apply print quality inspection.

0:00 Basic introduction to print quality inspection

0:38 The standards supported by MVTec HALCON

1:37 Standard-conform image acquisition

2:38 HDevelop examples

We are using HALCON 20.11 in this tutorial.

Introducing 360 Degree Mesh Data Generation - LMI Technologies(3D Machine Vision)

Now users can transform multiple 3D point clouds into “meshed” surface data for use in high-precision shape measurement and inspection.

Mesh data consists of interconnected data points that form a continuous, 360º surface representing the object’s complete geometry that leverages high accuracy 6DoF alignment for wide and ring-type multi-sensor layouts.

Users can then apply any of Gocator’s built-in Surface tools to perform advanced measurements on the meshed surface (e.g., measuring features on the sides of objects).

Deep Learning Classification - MVTec Halcon(Deep Learning, Machine Vision Library)

With the MVTec Deep Learning Tool, it’s possible to train a deep-learning-based classification model from scratch.

First, we import images of your application – using the folder structure, the Deep Learning Tool can assign labels automatically. We can then review our data by filtering the images according to these labels.

After that, we train the model using transfer learning and pre-trained networks provided by MVTec.

Lastly, we can review the trained model in detail, using a confusion matrix, heatmaps, and more.  Deep Learning Tool(version 0.5) used in this video.

Machine Vision for Agriculture - MVTec Halcon

Plant protection is an important component of crop cultivation to ensure high yields and best quality. Growing objections and increasingly strict regulations of traditional protection methods are challenges that have to be faced – today and in the future.

Therefore, it is necessary for crop protection products to be put to particularly efficient use. With the help of industrial image processing, it is possible to distinguish between crops and weeds in real time during the spraying process and to precisely apply the agent.

Deep OCR - MVTec Halcon

With Deep OCR, MVTec introduces a holistic deep-learning-based approach for optical character recognition (OCR).

Deep OCR can localize numbers and letters much more robustly, regardless of their orientation, font type, and polarity. The ability to group characters automatically allows the identification of whole words. This improves the recognition performance significantly and avoids the misinterpretation of characters with similar appearances.
